This section presents the requirements for:
Graduation Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed below, students must satisfy:
- the University regulations, including the process of Academic Performance
Evaluation (see the Academic Regulations of the University section
of this Calendar),
- the common regulations applying to all B.A. students including those
relating to First-Year Seminars and Breadth Requirements (see Academic
Regulations for the Bachelor of Arts Degree).
Students should consult the Department when planning their program and
selecting courses.
Program Requirements
French
B.A. Honours (20.0 credits)
A. Credits Included in the Major CGPA (10.0 credits):
- 1.0 credit in: FREN 1100;
- 1.0 credit in: FREN 2100 [1.0];
- 2.0 credits in Initiation aux études françaises A (FREN
2200), B (FREN 2300), C (FREN 2400), D (FREN 2500)
- 6.0 credits from the following headings (Littératures nationales
, Thèmes , Approches , Dimensions culturelles, Réflexions
linguistiques, Traduction, Enseignement et apprentissage du français,
Langue)
B. Credits Not Included in the Major CGPA (10.0 credits):
- 8.0 credits in electives not in French;
- 2.0 credits in free electives.

B.A. Combined Honours (20.0 credits)

- 1.0 credit in FREN 1100;
- 1.0 credit FREN 2100;
- 2.0 credits in Initiation aux études françaises A (FREN
2200), B (FREN 2300), C (FREN 2400), D (FREN 2500);
- 2.0 credits from the following headings: Littératures nationales,
Thèmes, Approches, Dimensions culturelles, Réflexions
linguistiques, Traduction, Enseignement et apprentissage du francais,
Langue.
- 1.0 credit at the 4000-level from the following headings: Littératures
nationales, Thèmes, Approches, Dimensions culturelles, Réflexions
linguistiques, Traduction, Enseignement et apprentissage du francais,
Langue.
B. Additional Requirements (8.0 credits):
- The requirements from the other discipline must be satisfied;
- 5.0 credits in electives not in French or the other discipline;
- Sufficient free electives to make 20.0 credits for the degree.
French and Journalism
B.J. Combined Honours (20.0 credits)
This program is restricted to students in the Bachelor of Journalism
program. Please consult the Journalism section of the calendar for complete
details. The required credits in French are as follows:

- 1.0 credit in FREN 1100;
- 1.0 credit IN FREN 2100;
- 2.0 credits in Initiation aux études françai ses A (FREN
2200), B (FREN 2300), C (FREN 2400), D (FREN 2500);
- 2.0 credits in FREN at the 3000-level;
- 1.0 credit in FREN at the 4000-level.
French
B.A. General (15.0 credits)
A. Credits Included in the Major CGPA (6.0 credits):
- 1.0 credit in FREN 1100;
- 1.0 credit FREN 2100;
- 2.0 credits in Initiation aux études françaises A (FREN
2200), B (FREN 2300), C (FREN 2400), D (FREN 2500);
- 2.0 credits in FREN at the 3000 level;
B. Credits Not Included in the Major CGPA (9.0 credits):
- 7.0 credits not in French;
- 2.0 credits in free electives.
Minor in French
Open to all undergraduate degree students not in French programs.
Requirements (4.0 credits):
- 3.0 credits in FREN at the level of FREN 1100 or higher;
- 1.0 credit in FREN at the 3000-level;
- The remaining requirements of the major discipline(s) and degree must
be satisfied.
Minor in French Interdisciplinary Studies
Open to all undergraduate degree students not in French programs.
Requirements (4.0 credits):
- 3.0 credits in FINS;
- 1.0 credit in FINS at the 3000-level;
- The remaining requirements of the major discipline(s) and degree must
be satisfied.
Certificate in French Language Studies (C.F.L.S.)
A 5.0-credit undergraduate certificate designed for both part- time and
full-time students wishing to perfect their spoken and written French.
Students may also earn the Certificate as part of a B.A. Honours in French,
or an Honours program in any other discipline, or as part of a Combined
B.A. Honours in French and another discipline.
Requirements (5.0 credits):
- 1.0 credit in FREN 1100;
- 1.0 credit FREN 2100;
- 1.0 credit from Initiation aux études françaises A (FREN
2200), B (FREN 2300), C (FREN 2400), D (FREN 2500)
- 1.0 credit in FREN 3701, FREN 3702;
- 1.0 further credit in FREN at the 3000-level.
Certificate in French Language Teaching and Learning (C.F.L.T.L.)
A 5.0-credit undergraduate certificate designed for both part-time and
full-time students wishing to improve their knowledge and appreciation
of the teaching and learning process. Students may also earn the Certificate
as part of a B.A.(Honours) in French, or an Honours program in any other
discipline, or as part of a combined B.A. (Honours) in French and another
discipline.
Requirements (5.0 credits):
- 1.0 credit in FREN 1100;
- 1.0 credit in FREN 2100;
- 1.0 credit in: Initiation aux études françaises A (FREN
2200), C (FREN 2400);
- 2.0 credits in French Language Teaching and Learning, FREN 3601, FREN
3602, FREN 4601, FREN 4602.
Certificate in French Translation Studies (C.F.T.S.)
A 5.0-credit undergraduate certificate designed for both part-time and
full-time students wishing to improve their translation skills. While
not a professional program, this certificate should meet the needs of
those who are occasionally called upon to translate in their work environment.
Students may also earn the Certificate as part of a B.A. Honours in French,
or an Honours program in any other discipline, or as part of a Combined
B.A. Honours in French, and another discipline.
Course Requirements (5.0 credits):
- 1.0 credit in FREN 1100;
- 0.5 credit in Initiation aux études françaises D (FREN
2500)
- 0.5 credit from: Initiation aux études françaises A
(FREN 2200), B (FREN 2300), C (FREN 2400);
- 2.0 credits in FREN 3501, FREN 3502, FREN 4501, FREN 4502;
- 1.0 credit tutorial in translation FREN 4801.
Note: students are not permitted to count the same course(s) towards
more than one certificate offered by the Department of French. Should
any student undertake another certificate, appropriate course substitutions
will be required.
