The University Centre

The University Centre, more commonly known as the Unicentre, is a focal point for student life at Carleton. It houses student-run CKCU-FM radio; the university's student newspaper The Charlatan; Information Carleton; a variety of student clubs and organizations including the Carleton University Students' Association; the university club; as well as pubs, eateries, banking machines and a variety store that includes a postal outlet. The Paul Menton Centre for Persons with Disabilities, located in Room 500, provides a wide range of support services to students with learning, physical, psychiatric and medical disabilities.

Designated parking
Available in Lot 2 (three spaces) and at the loading dock (two spaces). Lot 2 requires a permit to park.

Exterior Entrance
Two accessible entrances:

  1. main front entrance located on the east side of the building, near Parking Lot 2, and
  2. loading dock entrance at level 2 by Porter Hall.

Both have automatic door openers.

Tunnel Access
Tunnel entrances at the first level and on the fourth level from the University Centre-Tory Building link.

Elevators
One accessible elevator services all levels and is equipped with tactile buttons and signs. Does not service one wing of the third floor, which is serviced instead by a wheelchair lift from the second level.

Washrooms
Accessible washrooms located on levels 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Telephones
Pay phones accessible. Designated phones for priority use of persons with disabilities located on levels 2 (lobby of Porter Hall), 4 and 5.

Lecture/Classroom Areas
Porter Hall (level 2) and Baker's lounge (level 4) are used for occasional events and lectures.

Study Areas
Baker's lounge on fourth level.

Proximity to Lounges/Refreshments
Hugo's, Arcade, Unicentre Store and Oliver's on first level. Peppermill Cafeteria and Mike's Place on second level. Rooster's, Faculty Club on the fourth level.

Existing/Remaining Obstacles
More direct access through Porter Hall from the loading dock. No elevator access to one wing of the third floor.

Remarks/Hints
In order to avoid a steep, troublesome rise in the tunnel system as it goes around the University Centre (three stories high), students should use the University Centre-Tory Building link to get to the top of the tunnel rise.
