The theoretical study of language use, as pursued by linguists and philosophers. Conversational implicature, deixis; the semantics-pragmatics boundary; speaker's reference; speech acts. (Also listed as

LALS 2800 and
PHIL 2800.
Prerequisite: 0.5 credit in Philosophy or Linguistics and Applied Language Studies or second-year standing.
Lectures three hours a week.
