The Academic Year

Undergraduate Studies

The following schedule contains the dates prescribed by the University Senate for academic activities. Dates relating to fee payment, cancellation of course selections, late charges, and other fees or charges will be published in the Important Dates and Deadlines section of the Registration Website (carleton.ca/registration).

 

The academic year is divided into three terms:

Summer term: May - August

Fall term: September - December

Winter term: January - April

 

Courses are offered in the following patterns:

Early summer: May - June

Late summer: July - August

Full summer: May - August

Fall term: September - December

Winter term: December - April

Fall/winter: September - April

Courses are offered during the day and the evening.

Summer Term 2007
March 1, 2007
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a degree program for the 2007 summer term.
May 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications for degree program transfers for the 2007 summer term.
May 16
•  Full summer and early summer courses begin.
May 21
•  Statutory holiday, University closed. Missed classes may meet May 25.
May 25
•  Last day for registration and course changes for early summer and full summer courses.
June 8
•  Last day to withdraw from early summer courses.
•  Last day to submit, to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for June examinations.
June 14-26
•  Fall-winter final deferred examinations will be held.
June 26
•  Last day of classes for early summer. (Note: Full Summer courses resume July 3
•  Last day for handing in term assignments, subject to any earlier course deadline.
June 27-30
•  Early summer final examinations will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
July 2
•  Statutory holiday, University closed. Missed classes may meet July 13.
July 3
•  Late summer courses begin. Full summer courses resume.
July 6
•  Last day for registration and course changes for late summer courses.
July 27
•  Last day to withdraw from full summer, late summer courses and any other courses that end this term.
•  Last day to submit, to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for August examinations.
August 6
•  Civic holiday, University closed. Missed classes may meet August 10.
August 13
•  Last day of summer term classes.
•  Last day for handing in term assignments, subject to any earlier course deadline.
August 14-18
•  Final examinations in full summer and late summer courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
September 30
•  Last day for receipt of applications for review of final grades in summer term courses.
October 12-13
•  Summer term deferred final examinations will be held.
Fall Term 2007
September 1, 2007
•  Last day for receipt of applications from potential fall graduates.
September 1-8
•  Academic and social orientation to the campus.
September 3
•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
September 4
•  Fall term begins. All students are expected to be on campus.
September 5
•  Academic Orientation. Class and laboratory preparations, departmental introductions for students, and other academic preparation activities will be held.
•  Orientation for Teaching Assistants.
September 6
•  Fall and fall/winter classes begin.
September 21
•  Last day for registration.
•  Last day to change courses or sections for fall/winter and fall term courses.
September 30
•  Last day for receipt of applications for review of final grades in summer term courses.
October 5
•  University Day at Carleton. Undergraduate classes suspended.
October 8
•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
October 15
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a degree program for the 2008 winter term from applicants whose documents originate from outside Canada or the United States.
November 9
•  Last day to withdraw from fall term courses and any other courses that end this term.
•  Last day to submit, to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for December examinations.
November 15
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a degree program for the 2008 winter term.
November 19
•  Last day for tests or examinations in courses below the 4000-level before the final examination period (see Examination Regulations in the Academic Regulations of the University section of this Calendar).
December 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications from potential winter (February) graduates.
December 3
•  Last day of fall-term classes.
•  Fall term ends.
•  Last day for receipt of applications for degree program transfers for winter term of fall/winter session.
•  Last day for handing in term assignments for fall term courses, subject to any earlier course deadline.
December 6-22 (including Saturdays)
•  Final examinations in fall term courses and mid-term examinations in fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
December 24 - January 1
•  University closed.
Winter Term 2008
January 2, 2008
•  Winter term begins.
January 7
•  Winter-term classes begin.
January 18
•  Last day for registration for winter term courses.
•  Last day to change courses or sections for winter term courses.
January 30
•  Last day for receipt of applications for review of final grades in fall-term courses.
February 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications from potential Spring graduates.
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to the Bachelor of Architectural Studies and the Bachelor of Social Work degree programs for the 2008-09 fall-winter session.
February 15-23 (may include evenings and Saturdays)
•  Fall-term deferred examinations will be written.
February 18-22
•  Winter Break, classes suspended.
February 18
•  Statutory holiday, university closed.
March 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications to the Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Industrial Design and the Bachelor of Music degree program for the 2008-2009 fall/winter session.
March 14
•  Last day to withdraw from fall/winter, winter-term courses and any other courses that end this term.
•  Last day to submit, to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, Formal Examination Accommodation Forms for April examinations.
March 21
•  Statutory holiday, university closed. Classes missed will meet on Monday, April 7 on a Friday schedule.
March 24
•  Last day for tests or examinations in courses below the 4000-level before the final examination period (see Examination Regulations in the Academic Regulations of the University section of this Calendar).
April 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a program (except Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Social Work), for the 2008-2009 fall/winter session, from candidates whose documents originate outside Canada or the United States.
April 7
•  Last day of fall/winter and winter-term classes. All classes follow a FRIDAY schedule. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place in Review Period until the end of Winter term onApril 9.
April 8-9
•  Review Period. Some lectures, laboratories, review tutorials, etc. may take place.
April 9
•  Winter term ends.
•  Last day for handing in term assignments, subject to any earlier course deadline.
April 11-29 (including Saturdays)
•  Final examinations in winter term and fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.
May 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to the Bachelor of Journalism program and the Child Studies program for the 2008-2009 fall/winter session.
June 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a program (except Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Social Work and Child Studies program) for the 2008-2009 fall/winter session from mature applicants, from those presenting post-secondary education qualifications and from those transferring from other universities in Canada or the United States.
•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a program (except Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Humanities, Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Social Work and Child Studies program) from applicants with high school qualifications from Canada or the United States.
June 12-24
•  Fall/winter and winter term deferred final examinations will be held.
June 15
•  Last day for receipt of applications for internal degree transfers to allow for registration for the 2008-2009 fall/winter session.
June 30
•  Last day for receipt of applications for review of final grades in fall/winter and winter term courses.
Summer Term 2008

•  Last day for receipt of applications for admission to a degree program for the 2008 summer term.
May 1
•  Last day for receipt of applications for degree program transfers for the 2008 summer term.

•  Full summer and early summer courses begin.

•  Statutory holiday, University closed.
May 23
•  Last day for registration and course changes for early summer and full summer courses.
June 13
•  Last day to withdraw from early summer courses.

•  Summer term deferred final examinations will be held.
