Linguistic Semantics
Linguistic approaches to meaning, likely including semiotics, structuralism and the truth-conditional paradigm. Application of linguistic techniques of analysis to lexical meaning will be emphasized. Topics may include: different interpretations of “meaning”; semantic relations within language (synonymy, dependence, contrastiveness); types of meaning and language functions.
Prerequisite:
LALS 2003 or LALS/MCOM/PHIL 2504.
Lectures three hours a week.
