Carleton University celebrated a one-of-a-kind Graduate Diploma in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program on Aug. 22. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, attended and gave an address at the Celebrating Philanthropy panel discussion.

“These students are part of a profession,” the Governor General said. “Professions are loosely defined but, in my view, professionals are on the leading edge of those fundamental values that are most important to a country. They have a specialized body of knowledge that can’t simply be picked up a how-to-book or by watching people operate for a day or two, it requires intensive study and careful consideration and teaching from the great mentors of the profession.”

Carleton University’s Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership department invites you to this full-day workshop on Monday, June 10th 2013. Please pass this message along to your networks.

Description

Glossy brochures, social media, an interactive website and front-page media are the glitz and glamour of a communications campaign. But, deciding what approach to take requires careful consideration so that precious funds are put to the best use. Unfortunately, the need for more volunteers, clients and supporters leads many charities to cast their communications net at the ‘general public’… without result.

In this full-day working session, you’ll be guided through the process to create an effective communications plan, from measurable objectives, to target audiences, to decisions between communications materials. Together we’ll develop your strategy and then determine the approach that actually reaches your target audience and motivates them to take action.

Agenda

Why have a communications plan?

Who creates the communications plan?

Situation analysis: internal and external

Competition

Setting goals and objectives

Getting to know you: primary target audiences

Key messages

Communications tools and tactics: editorial calendar, website, social media, pitching to media

Facilitator

As Owner and Chief Strategist at Village PR, Heather Badenoch leverages nearly two decades of success in non-profit, government and high-tech to provide communications consulting to charities. Employers and clients have included the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, Western Ottawa Community Resources, Carefor Health and Community Services, Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Citizen Advocacy of Ottawa and more.

Heather is the Vice President of the Canadian Public Relations Society Ottawa-Gatineau chapter and serves on the board of directors for the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. She is also a proud alumna of the Carleton University Sprott School of Business.

Dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable people and animals, Heather has been a volunteer foster parent since 1998 with Hopeful Hearts Dog Rescue and the Ottawa Humane Society, and is a volunteer career mentor with the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization.

Date: Monday, June 10th 2013

Time: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Location: River Building, Room 2420R, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa

Cost: $226.00 ($200.00+HST). This fee includes continental breakfast, lunch and an afternoon break. Please make payment by cheque to Carleton University and mail to the address below.

Registration: Please register online or by pasting the following URL in your browser (seating is limited, please register quickly)

Until now.

Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration is launching a new Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership degree and graduate diploma in the summer of 2013. These credentials build on Carleton’s strong foundation in the area of public policy and administration, while focusing on producing leaders who have the distinctive, sophisticated knowledge needed to effectively navigate non-profits through a rapidly changing environment.
