The 2012 Institute of Public Administration (IPAC) National Capital Region Student Essay Prize honours excellence in the study of public administration. The objective of the competition is to encourage students with career interests in the public service to make original contributions to the field of public administration by examining the structures, processes and outcomes of public policy, administration and management in all spheres of government in Canada.

IPAC-NAC received a record number of entries this year between graduate and undergraduate-level programs from five universities within the region. The top prizes in this year’s IPAC NCR student essay award went to Jamie Moeller and Leila Steiner.

Jamie Moeller’s essay, which made the case for universal dental care in Canada, won the top prize while Leela Steiner’s essay on the regulation of endocrine disrupting compounds was the runner-up. The essays were judged by a panel of reviewers and verified with subject-matter experts.

Congratulations Jamie and Leela!!

12 March 2012 (Ottawa) – The School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) at Carleton University honoured Ms. Judith LaRocque, Canada’s Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, with the Bissett Alumni Award.

<img class="alignleft size-large wp-image-7905" title="AMB. Ms. LaRocque’s 30-year career has taken her from government departments, to the halls of the Governor General’s office, to the coordinating of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Throughout her career, Judith LaRocque has taken on a wide range of challenging new assignments and roles, and has consistently delivered on each,” said Dr. Susan Phillips, Director of SPPA. “She is a respected and powerful woman both at home and internationally, and is a fantastic role model for all Carleton University graduates.”

“The Bissett Alumni Award shows current students the importance and value of public service,” said Alex Paterson, Co-Chair of the event. “We are proud to honour Ms. LaRocque as she provides an amazing example of the kind of hard work and dedication needed to solve tough policy challenges.”

Each year the Canadian Evaluation Society holds its annual Case Competition for all schools involved in the teaching of program evaluation. This year, I am very pleased to announce that we have five teams that are entered (3 diploma teams, and two master’s teams). In total, there are more than 25 teams competing in the preliminary round of the competition which takes place on Saturday, February 11th, 20112.

Our teams have worked very hard this term to prepare for next Saturday’s preliminary round having undergone some serious training from their coaches (myself and Steven Montague). The top three teams from the preliminary round will proceed to the final round which will take place at the CES National Conference to be held the second week of May in Halifax. I am confident that all of our teams have a very good chance of proceeding to the final round.

Please join me in wishing each of the teams and their members the very best as they compete on Saturday. I think that I speak for everyone when I say that it is time Carleton University takes this cup and places it where it belongs – in our trophy case! Last year we came very close with an overall second place finish to the University of Saskatchewan.

When we first set out to make Movember an official MAPA event we had ambitions to double the $795 in donations we received the previous year. With a final tally of $5522 in donations this year we were simply stunned with the level of support we received. A large number of professors and students grew their mustaches with pride, ignoring pleas from their partners to “shave that ridiculous thing off your face”. Even more of you attended events and donated cash to benefit this very worthy cause.

We are beyond proud to be part of the SPPA community. Professors, administrators, and our fellow students all deserve credit for ensuring that our school remains top of the heap not only in terms of academics, but also in fostering a sense of community both inside and outside the classroom.

Thanks to everyone involved in making the first official MAPA Movember event a tremendous success. Our hope is that future MAPA executives capitalize on the tremendous generosity of the SPPA community and beat our current donation record.
