Mika Westerlund, PhD
Sprott School of Business
Carleton University

When: Thursday, June 20th, 2013, 6-9 p.m.

Where: Room ME 3380, Mackenzie Building, Carleton

Register: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/7029249675/Carleton

There is a growing culture of sustainable business practices and rapidly increasing demand for environmentally friendly technologies in all around the world. Governments are promoting a shift towards energy efficiency and clean technologies, and companies are making major strategic investments in support of products and processes that reduce the environmental footprint. The leading sustainability business models combine green and blue innovation to increase positive social impact.

Sustainability can be a driver of huge business success and simultaneously have a positive impact on people and the planet. However, many companies are accused of riding the sustainability wave as a publicity stunt and greening in words only rather than action. We need entrepreneurs and leaders with the courage and conviction to take bold action ahead of others. We also need radically new business models that create true value for the environment and the society, bring competitive advantage to companies, and have the potential to transform industries globally.

In this presentation, Mika Westerlund from the Carleton University’s TIM program will talk about what we can learn from the global sustainability business leaders. In the talk, he will discuss the need for a new sustainability oriented business culture; describe emerging sustainability business models that aspiring entrepreneurs can create or adopt; and present recent research and sustainability trends.

About the Speaker:

Mika Westerlund is an Assistant Professor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business and teaches in the Technology Innovation Management program. He previously held positions as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley and in the School of Economics at Aalto University in Finland. Prior to academic career, he was entrepreneur in the IT industry.

Mika earned his PhD degree in Marketing from the Helsinki School of Economics. His doctoral research focused on software firms’ business models and his current research interests include sustainability, open innovation, business strategy, and management models in high-tech companies. Mika’s has researched these areas in Europe and the North America, and spent a year in London Business School, UK, as a visiting scholar

Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) – in partnership with Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration – is delighted to invite you to the next event in the AKFC Seminars on Innovative Financing for Development.

Investing in a Foundation for the Future:
Innovative Financing for Early Childhood Education

Decades of research has shown that the experiences of a child’s early years will lay the foundation for their education, behaviour and health as an adult. Governments around the world have been recommitting to early education programs over the last few years, but these programs require a massive investment of people, time and money. In uncertain economic times, budgets for education – and early human development, in particular – are often the first to suffer.

AKFC is pleased to welcome Dr. Marito Garcia, Lead Economist and Program Manager at the Human Development Department of the Africa Region of the World Bank, to introduce innovative financing mechanisms that can change the nature of education program funding worldwide, and the impact on the world’s poor. Dr. Garcia will explore how the education world might learn from experiences in other fields to tap into conditional cash transfers, create social impact bonds and design education credits to infuse new energy and resources into laying a solid foundation for the next generation.

We hope you will join us:

Thursday, May 16, 2013
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat
199 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, ON, K1N 1K6

Please note that there is no parking at the Delegation. Street parking is available nearby, on Boteler Street, Dalhousie Street, Parent Avenue, and Bolton Street. Please take care to respect all posted parking regulations. The Delegation has visitor entrances on Sussex Drive and Boteler Street.

VACCINES: CAN ANIMAL DISEASES IN AFRICA BE ELIMINATED TO HELP FEED THE POOR?

Infectious diseases are the single largest cause of livestock mortality worldwide, disrupting international agricultural trade and contributing to food insecurity. In sub-Saharan Africa, livestock production is vital to the livelihoods of millions of small-scale farmers and accounts for 25% of national income in some countries.

Funded by the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund, Canada and South Africa’s expertise in vaccine research is being put to work to develop and test a cost-effective and easy-to-administer single-dose vaccine that will protect cattle, sheep, and goats from multiple livestock diseases. A second project, involving researchers from Kenya and Canada, is developing a vaccine to protect cattle against contagious bovine pleuropneumonia – a highly contagious bacterial disease of cattle that has serious economic and trade consequences in sub-Saharan Africa

Join us to hear Dr. Andrew Potter, director of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan, and Dr. David Wallace, senior researcher at the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa, talk about the work that their two teams are doing on livestock vaccine development in Africa.

When: Tuesday, May 7th 2013, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: IDRC, 150 Kent Street, 8th Floor, W.
