FGPA financial support for graduate student-run conferences

For many years, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs has provided financial support for graduate student-run conferences held at Carleton.

This year, all funding requests for graduate student-run conferences held at Carleton before May 31, 2014 should be submitted to FGPA.EA@cunet.carleton.ca by October 15, 2013.

SPPA Students Present Their Research at ANSER Conference

Current and graduating students of the School of Public Policy and Administration were active participants at the annual conference of the Association for Nonprofit and Social Economy Research (ANSER) in Victoria in early June. Brittany Fritsch presented research undertaken with Becky Rossi and Professor Tessa Hebb examining the tension between business and mission among social enterprises. Chris Yordy presented his work on rigour and theory at the CFICE roundtable on community-campus engagement. And Chinyere Amadi presented her research on the resilience of women borrowers in the Alterna credit union micro-loan program. Congratulations to Brittany and Chinyere, who are new graduates!

Faculty were also represented at ANSER. Professor Susan Phillips presented her work with Michael Lenczner on open data in immigrant serving agencies, and Professor Ted Jackson, an ANSER Board member, chaired the CFICE and Alterna sessions.

SPPA PhD’s participate in 2013 Policy Studies Conference at Ryerson University

Six of our PhD students are on the program for a conference organized by the PhD Program in Policy studies at Ryerson University. The conference, entitled “Policy Research in Times of Austerity and Uncertainty”, will take place at Ryerson on May 8^th, 9^th and 10^th. Among those scheduled to participate are PhD students Ruby Dagher, Senada Delic, Silvia Garcia de Agnelli, John Jacobs, Annie McEwen and Jesse Steinberg. In addition, Professor Chris Stoney will be a Guest Speaker. The preliminary program for the event is at http://www.ryerson.ca/policyconference/program.html.

Aga Khan Foundation Canada Carleton Seminars on Innovative Finance for Development Launched

On March 26, the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration launched their co-sponsored seminar series on innovative finance for development. Opened by the Foundation’s President Khalil Sharif, and moderated by the School’s Director, Susan Phillips, the inaugural seminar focused on an examination of the global impact investing industry, presented by SPPA faculty member Ted Jackson and consultant Karim Harji, a graduate of the School.

Attended by more than 120 participants at The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat and online around the world, the proceedings will be posted on the Foundation’s website.

The next seminar, to be held on April 30 in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, will focus on lessons from the international field of microfinance.

The Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC) is preparing for the 2013 Annual Conference in Montreal, Quebec, August 18-21, 2013. We would like to invite you, a student or colleague to participate by proposing a paper or poster or by nominating a great teacher:

Adjudicated Papers at the IPAC 2013 Annual Conference
Submit an abstract (up to 500 words) of a paper to be presented at the 2013 Annual Conference. Panels explore a wide range of new and emerging research. The conference theme is “Reinventing Public Administration”. The sub-themes will focus on reinventing public administration…

in relation to citizens and elected officials;
in intergovernmental relations;
in processes;
and learning from the past and beyond.

Pierre De Celles Award for Teaching Excellence in Public Administration
The award recognizes the best teacher in Canada who brings their knowledge, experience and passion to students.

Queen’s Policy Journal’s Call for Papers

The Queen’s Policy Review is a peer-reviewed, faculty advised publication affiliated with the Queen’s School of Policy Studies. We are currently welcoming submissions from graduate students that discuss Canadian domestic and international policy issues. The deadline for submissions is March 20, 2013. Papers submitted by the deadline will be considered for our Summer 2013 publication.

Submissions must:

Be between 2000 and 5000 words.
Include a 100 to 200 word abstract.
Use Chicago citation format.
Discuss a current Canadian domestic and/or international policy issue.

Please note that only one submission per person will be considered. Submissions must be in a “.doc,” “.docx” or “.rtf” format and include an abstract.

CUNorth: March 8 – 2013 OCSNRS Symposium invitation

The 2013 Ottawa-Carleton Northern Research Symposium (OCSNRS) is taking place at Carleton University, in the Senate Room (608 Robertson Hall), from 8:30am – 4:30pm on Friday, March 8th.

All faculty and students who are conducting northern research at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa are invited to attend this annual student-run conference. While those engaged in northern research are given preference, additional seating may available for those with a general interest in northern research if space permits.

Award winning photographer Michelle Valberg (http://www.michellevalberg.com/) will be delivering the keynote address, followed by presentations from students in wide-ranging disciplines including anthropology, biology, earth science, geography, and public policy. More information, including a complete schedule and listing of abstracts is available at the OCSNRS website (http://www3.carleton.ca/northernresearch/OCSNRS_schedule.html).
