Red Quill Books Graduate Scholarship in Social Justice

Awarded annually to an outstanding full or part-time graduate student enrolled in any program of study who is engaged in thesis work related to some aspect of social justice. Application is required. A student will be selected by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Post-Doctoral Affairs on the recommendation of a committee which shall include members of the editorial collective of Red Quill Books.

This award is valued at $500.00

Fourth Annual Carleton Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award

Call for nominations: NOW OPEN

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) would like to announce the launch of the fourth annual Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award. This award is intended to recognize faculty who render exceptional service to graduate students as supervisors and research mentors. The effect of such faculty on the careers of students is frequently transformational.

In order to be considered for an award, faculty must be nominated. Nominators can be current and/or former graduate students, faculty members, and/or staff. Nominations from former and/or current graduate students are particularly welcomed. Nominations should include a statement of no more than 500 words, attesting to the nominee’s exceptional contribution to graduate student supervision and research mentorship. Each individual must submit his/her own nomination. Unsuccessful nominees from previous years may be nominated again.

Nominations must be sent as an electronic attachment in Microsoft Word or “.pdf” format by October 15, 2013 to FGPA.EA@cunet.carleton.ca. Awards will be announced early in the New Year.

Public Service Recruitment Campaign

The Public Service Recruitment Campaign has just opened. While these are not Co-op positions, I know many of you are interested in job opportunities with the federal government, after graduation.

FGPA financial support for graduate student-run conferences

For many years, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs has provided financial support for graduate student-run conferences held at Carleton.

This year, all funding requests for graduate student-run conferences held at Carleton before May 31, 2014 should be submitted to FGPA.EA@cunet.carleton.ca by October 15, 2013.

GEOG 5003 course being offered in Fall 2013

GEOG 5003 course on Critical Approaches to Qualitative Inquiry will be offered this fall term 2013. Although housed in the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies, the course is open to graduate students from other disciplines, and seeks to balance exposure to both qualitative methods and methodological considerations.

If you are an incoming and (where appropriate) existing graduate student, and want to develop a sound methodological approach to research this is the course for you. Last year, students enjoyed rich discussions resulting from the interdisciplinary environment.

MacOdrum Library Construction Update

The front doors of the MacOdrum Library will be re-opening on Monday, July 22.

All access to the library will be through an outside ramp next to Dunton Tower. There will be no tunnel access to the library until further notice. The temporary doors giving tunnel access for people with disabilities and access through the doors on the Southam Hall side of the building will be closed.

Updates about the construction will be provided as information becomes available on the MacOdrum Library Website.

The E-Thesis Deposit begins August 1st!

Effective Aug. 1, you will no longer have to deliver two hard copies of your FINAL thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA).

Phase One of the new and improved Electronic Thesis Deposit (ETD) procedure will be launched on that date.

For grad students, this means that, as of Aug. 1., you will now upload your final thesis/dissertation online. This version of your thesis will include all revisions that were requested at your thesis defence and have been approved by your supervisor.

More information is available on the Electronic Thesis Deposit web page. More details will be available in the near future.

Please note that, if you have completed your thesis before Aug. 1, you should still hand deliver copies to FGPA.

CU-Internet Service is being retired

On August 25 CCS will be retiring the CU-Internet service due to the lack of encryption and security in this method.

To encourage people to start using CU-Wireless or Eduroam, beginning July 14:

CU-Internet session will be limited to 30 minutes
A new service called XpressConnect will be introduced to help people configure CU-Wireless
A new help service will be broadcast everywhere on campus where there is wireless service
