Science, Innovation & Energy Officer – Calgary job opportunity
The British Consulate General in Calgary is seeking a Science, Innovation and Energy Officer. The main purpose of this position is to promote UK science, innovation and energy interests in the region with a focus on developing collaborative opportunities in the science and energy portfolios and on reporting.
The successful candidate will pursue UK priorities in the science, innovation and energy spaces, with a particular focus on the opportunities and policy drivers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Working under the umbrella of the Consulate-General this will involve engaging with academia, research institutes, industry, civil society, Provincial-level policy makers, and others to promote UK interests. The successful candidate will need a good understanding of energy, environment and resource security policies in Canada in the context of wider global dynamics, alongside capacity to develop new ideas on how to foster greater UK-Canada collaboration.
Duties and Responsibilities include (all apply to Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba)
- Identify, develop and support collaborative opportunities in research science and at the industry and commercial interface.
- Analyse and report on Science and Innovation policy and best practice for UK stakeholders.
- Communicate UK science policy to local policymakers and other stakeholders.
- Identify emerging technologies that play to the UK’s comparative advantages and to facilitate their transfer through technology partnerships, research collaborations and other projects.
- Provide analysis and advice on the energy and climate security sectors.
- Develop a wide range of contacts within industry, academia, civil society and research bodies on science, innovation, energy (including clean tech) and climate security.
- Participate in and support BCG Calgary’s outreach, communication and social media activities, particularly on energy and innovation.
- Support senior management and high-level visits relating to science and innovation, and energy/climate security (briefing, programme management, reporting, etc).
- Play a value adding role in corporate and other activities that promote a culture of diversity, innovative thinking and excellent team working in Calgary and the wider Canada network.
Minimum Qualifications/Experience
- Strong corporate, academic and/or government background in science, innovation or energy.
- A graduate degree in science, energy or a related field.
- Self-starter capable of working autonomously with light oversight.
- Knowledge of UK science, innovation, and energy sector strengths and capabilities would be an asset.
- Strong interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with key stakeholders in both academia and industry, and senior government officials.
- Top class oral and written skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues to non-experts.
Terms and Conditions:
The successful candidate will be required to travel within Canada, particularly in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and occasionally internationally. Out of office working is sometimes required.
This appointment requires pre-existing legal permissions to live and work in Canada and will be subject to providing satisfactory references and security clearances.
This is a full-time position, with salary of CAN$ 66,923.28 for 37.5 hours per week, plus pension, benefits and vacation.
