The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) requires an experienced, knowledgeable, motivated and career-minded National Youth Coordinator (Coordinator).  The Coordinator shall act as the primary point-person responsible for the planning, execution, and delivery of corporate projects on time, within budget, and according to specifications.  The Coordinator is responsible for supervising and overseeing the planning, design, production, promotion, profitability and overall coordination of CAP’s youth events. To achieve these important goals, the Coordinator must define project requirements and scope.  Efficient delivery of project deliverables, effective quality control, clear communication of expectations to stakeholders and upward reporting to senior management are critical responsibilities of a Coordinator.  Other duties include, but are not limited to, reviewing and arranging appropriate accommodation, transportation, catering, signage, promotional materials, procurement and security.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares briefing materials and provides advice to the Chief Executive Officer on youth issues and youth policies
  • Facilitates the operations and activities of the CAP National Youth Council
  • Coordinates the operations of the CAP NYC Secretariat
  • Organizes National Youth Council meetings and conference calls
  • Prepares briefing materials and provides advice on youth issues and policy to the National Youth Representative and National Youth Council
  • Conducts research on youth issues, youth policy and federal youth initiatives.
  • Raises awareness and shares information on Aboriginal youth issues
  • Conducts liaison with Provincial Youth Representatives and Councils
  • Distributes information to PTO’s, PTO Youth Representatives, and the CAP National Youth Council
  • Represents CAP at meetings, conferences, and other forums
  • Provides reports to the CAP Chief Executive Officer, Executive, Board of Directors, National Youth Council and Annual General Meetings
  • Prepares yearly work plans, and quarterly and annual reports
  • Seeks resources, and prepares funding proposals to hold youth meetings, and conduct work on youth issues.
  • Develops and manages projects and budgets and drafts project reports
  • Liaises with organizations, businesses, departments and other institutions on youth issues and responds to requests for information and input
  • Conducts communications activities, prepares the youth communications strategy and is responsibility to ensure that all youth information on the CAP web site is current
  • Assists with the development of the CAP National Youth Strategy
  • Other duties shall be assigned as required

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education with a minimum of three years of related experience; and or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Aboriginal ancestry, and a demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal customs and traditions
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Superb creation and facilitation of meetings, feedback sessions, and briefings in order to create consensus among stakeholders
  • Able to effectively communicate with all types of staff, including technical, professional, and upper management
  • Solid knowledge of internet technologies and social media
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Experience in a non-profit Aboriginal Organization setting
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and flexible to work beyond normal office hours when required
  • Ability to travel
  • Bilingualism, an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This is a fixed term position- ends March 30, 2014.  Continued staffing of this position is subject to annual priorities and confirmation of funding from the federal government
  • Work will be performed from the CAP National Office
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Occasional weekend and evening work and travel may be required
