2014-2015 How Ottawa Spends – Call for Chapter Proposals

Dear Colleagues

As co-editors of the next 2014-2015 How Ottawa Spends publication by McGill-Queen’s University Press, we are emailing you regarding our annual “call for chapter proposals” for the next edition, the 35th edition of the book.

At this stage, if you are interested in being a contributing author, all you have to do is email us a 300 word proposal for your possible chapter by FEBRUARY 18, 2013 outlining its overall purpose, scope and likely key analytical themes/arguments.

We will announce the final roster of  about 15 authors and chapter topics/issues very early in March.

As you know, How Ottawa Spends provides an annual independent multi-disciplinary analysis of national /federal priorities and overall fiscal and budgetary policy and politics. Possible contributing authors are invited to suggest chapters in ANY major economic or social policy field or on any key issues on the federal/national agenda.

Given current federal austerity measures and spending reduction issues the editors are also particularly interested in proposals for chapters dealing with:

  • Federal Fiscal policy and priorities given the second U.S. Obama Administration priorities
  • The NDP-Liberal Party battle to replace the Harper Government given the new Liberal leader
  • Aboriginal peoples’ protests, principles and policy impacts
  • Energy-environment policies
  • Emerging strategies of the Harper Government
  • Tax expenditures and tax reform
  • Is there a Cities agenda in the Harper era?
  • Infrastructure priorities and policies for 2014 and beyond
  • Impacts/choices of Tory cuts/changes in different policy fields and program realms.
  • Current trends in democracy, transparency, and accountability
  • What role does evidence play in federal policy making
  • Corruption?- What are the implications for federal spending
  • Procurement policy and politics
  • Defence Policy and spending
  • Transportation policy
  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Once the roster of authors has been selected/approved, the following stages will govern the development and completion of  How Ottawa Spends for 2014-15

  1. Submission of 1-2  page, more detailed point form Chapter outline
    —– April 15th, 2013
  2. Author’s workshop (to discuss draft outlines and key overall themes of the book) held in Ottawa at the School of Public Policy and Administration, Carleton University.
    —– April 26th, 2013
  3. Submission of 1st Draft of chapters (6000 word limit) by authors
