On Thursday, November 15th, Will Amos will present a talk entitled:
Offshore Drilling in Canada’s Arctic
Abstract: The talk will examine offshore drilling in Canada, and how this has (and has not) been impacted by the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. It will discuss the National Energy Board’s Arctic Offshore Drilling Review, the report and the filing requirements that emanated from this review process, and some of the key outstanding issues: environmental assessments and exploratory rights issuance, the same-season relief well requirements and reform of the liability regime. It will conclude with thoughts on the future of offshore governance in Canada more broadly writ.
Will Amos is Director of the Ecojustice Environmental Law Clinic, University of Ottawa. In this unique academic-NGO partnership, he teaches law and science students how to research, prepare and present evidence that will result in precedent-setting legal victories. He has litigated before all levels of court, most recently representing interveners in a Supreme Court case concerning contaminated site remediation in a bankruptcy and insolvency context. Before joining Ecojustice, Will practiced law at a large Montreal firm and with the federal broadcasting and telecommunications regulator. He has worked extensively on trade and environment issues in Canada and Mexico, and has prior experience on Parliament Hill working for the federal Environment Minister and the Prime Minister’s office.
