New Graduate Students & TA Orientation – Winter 2013

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (FGPA) in partnership with the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and CUPE 4600, is pleased to host Winter Orientation for all new graduate students and teaching assistants on January 18th. All new grad students and TAs are encouraged to attend as there will be several important information sessions covering topics such as: TA training, awards and funding, professional development opportunities, library services, and graduate studies for international students. Representatives from GSA, CUPE 4600, Payroll services, and the Business Office will also have information tables set up for students to ask questions. Lunch will be provided as well as a reception and evening pub night to follow the daytime orientation. Please see the full orientation schedule for a full list of sessions, speakers, and events below.

All participants must register by January 10th.

If you are a new TA as of January 2013 you must also register for the sessions:  New TA Information and TA Management System. You must login to Carleton Central, select ‘TA Management System’, and then TA Training and Orientation Sessions. Find the orientation sessions in the list and select ‘register’.

FGPA and GSA welcome tables with orientation materials

10 – 10:45am

New TA Information

This session is for new TAs starting in January 2013. Information will be provided on expectations and responsibilities of TAing, options for completing TA training hours, the TA Mentor program, as well as the support and resources available through your union, CUPE 4600.

 

Speakers: include Andre Loiselle (Associate Dean, FGPA), James Meades (Co-President, CUPE 4600) and Joe Lipsett (Manager TA Mentorship program, Educational Development Centre).

 

Opportunities to ask questions.

 

10:50 – 11:30am

TA Management System info session

This session is for new TAs starting in January 2013. Information and demonstration on how to navigate the TA management system will provided.

 

Speaker: Wayne McGee (FGPA)

 

11:30am – 12:15pm

General Orientation for all Grad Students

This session is the general orientation for all new graduate students. Students will gain information on campus services and professional training for graduate students, how to find info and stay up to date, and the support and resources provided by the Graduate Student Association.

 

Speakers: Wallace Clement (Dean, FGPA), Kelly Black (President GSA), Lean DeVellis (FGPA) and Lin Moody (FGPA)

 

12:15 – 1:30pm

Lunch / info tables

Lunch will be provided for all participants!

 

Information tables will also be set up so that students may ask questions and pick up materials. Representatives include:

  • GSA
  • CUPE 4600
  • Payroll
  • Business Office

 

1:30 – 2:00pm

Funding and Awards

Students will receive information on FGPA internal funding, awards, and bursaries, as well as external funding (OGS, SSHRC, NSERC).

 

Students will also hear about awards, bursaries and benefits available through GSA.

2:00 – 2:30pm

Library Services

This session will outline the library services available to graduate students, including: research support, data organization, workshops, and study space.

 

Speaker: Janice Scammell (Head of Reference Services, MacOdrum Library)

 

2:30 – 3:00pm

International Students

New international graduate students are encouraged to attend this session. Greg Aulenback (FGPA) will review the international student services and handbook, academic integrity guidelines and provide an opportunity to ask questions.

 

3:00 – 4:00pm

Reception

 

7pm – onwards

Evening Pub Event at Mike’s Place

Please join FGPA, GSA, and CUPE 4600 for an evening social at Mike’s Place, your graduate student pub on campus (located on the 600 University Centre Building, 3rd floor).
