SPPA professor provides real-world advice to the Carleton community in Research Works
With three decades of government experience, adjunct research professor Robert Slater provides real-world advice to the Carleton community. Slater, a recent recipient of the Order of Canada, specializes in environmental and sustainable development policy, and shares his vast expertise with the School of Public Policy & Administration.
Though he left the government seven years ago, Slater now has the opportunity to educate a new generation of civil servants through his work with Carleton grad students.
“My goal in dealing with students is to take advantage of my own government experience and provide practical experience at the same time,” says Slater.
Over the course of his bureaucratic career, Slater occupied several senior positions at Environment Canada, where he played a lead role in several high-profile agreements between Canada and the U.S., including the Acid Rain Agreements signed by Prime Minister Mulroney and the first President Bush. Slater’s work on the acid rain portfolio spanned an incredible 17 years — a length of service almost unheard of in today’s civil service. Slater says the unique opportunity allowed him to establish credibility and a positive reputation.
