Political Science & SPPA Speaker Series presents: The Economic Dependency Trap

The internationally respected First Nations scholar and activist Calvin Helin will present a lecture on the occasion of launching his new book, The Economic Dependency Trap.

Lawyer son of a hereditary Chief of B.C.’s Tsimshian Nation, Mr. Helin is widely considered the leading advocate of economic self-determination for First Nations. His Dances with Dependency: Out of Poverty through Self-Reliance is an international best-seller.

When not writing, Mr. Helin serves as President the Native Investment and Trade Association, the SOS Children’s Village, and the Eagle Group of Companies. He founded the Shudokan Society to provide free karate lessons to inner-city children as a way of teaching discipline, manners, self-respect and other important life lessons.

Mr. Helin was recipient of the top “40 Under 40” awards for both B.C. and Canada.
