Research Ethics Committee
The Ethics Committee within the School of Linguistics and Language Studies is charged with the responsibility of:
- identifying key ethical concerns regarding pedagogical practice as it relates to pedagogical projects (learning projects) designed as part of a course to provide training in research methodologies and undertaken by students within courses;
- defining and conducting procedures for ethical review for such learning projects which are in line with the Tri-Council Policy on Ethical Research Involving Human Participants.
The Ethics Committee has elaborated the distinction between “learning projects” and “research,” in terms of the purpose of the activity. If the activity is undertaken within the context of a course, is designed as part of a course to provide training in research methodologies, and leads to a mark, and there is no intention of publishing the results, it is considered a pedagogical, or learning, project.
It is therefore not subject to ethical review at the University level as a research project but must, rather, be reviewed by the Ethics Committee within SLaLS.
The University now follows the Province of Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
