Dr. Hirotani receives teaching award

Congratulations to Dr. Masako Hirotani on receiving a 2013 FASS Teaching Award! A formal announcement of the award will be made at the annual ‘Vin d’honneur’ celebration.

The Faculty gives out three FASS Teaching Awards every year in recognition of pedagogical excellence.

Language study could help second graders’ test scores

Dr. Masako Hirotani, Director of the Language Brain Laboratory at Carleton, and her research colleague, Dr. Michael Terry of the University of North Carolina, are interested in how discrepancy between home language and school language affects academic success.

Congratulations to SLaLS Director Randall Gess on the publication of a co-edited book on phonological variation in French:

Gess, Randall, Chantal Lyche and Trudel Meisenburg (Eds.). 2012. Phonological Variation in French: Illustrations from Three Continents. Amsterdam & Philadelphia: John Benjamins.

It addition to his co-editing role, Randall is also a co-author with Béatrice Akissi Boutin and Gabriel Marie Guèye of a chapter on phonological changes to French over time in Senegal.

Ash Asudeh joins editorial board of new journal

Associate Professor (Linguistics) Ash Asudeh has been asked to sit on the editorial board of the newly launched Journal of Language Modelling. A peer-reviewed publication with a diverse international editorial board, the Journal aims to bridge the gap between theoretical linguistics and natural language processing. Committed to open access, the journal will make accepted articles available online and on-demand via half-yearly and yearly paper publication. According to the website, the first volume is due out in late 2012.

Dr. Junker receives lectureship

Congratulations to Dr. Marie-Odile Junker on being named the 2011 Davidson Dunton Research Lecturer. As part of this honour, Marie-Odile will deliver a public lecture, “Giving voice to Aboriginal languages: putting information technologies to work for people,” on Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m. in the Senate Chamber. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Alumni Board Room.

Established in 1983, the Davidson Dunton Research Lecture enables distinguished Carleton University faculty scholars to share their research findings with the academic community and the general public.

Congratulations to Dr. Ash Asudeh on his recent book publication, The Logic of Pronominal Resumption, published by Oxford University Press.

About the Book:

This book is a cross-linguistic investigation of resumptive pronouns and related resumption phenomena. The author proposes a new theory of resumption based on the use of a resource logic for semantic composition and the typologically robust observation that resumptive pronouns are ordinary pronouns in their morphological and lexical properties.
