Sept. 30, 2013 – For immediate release

On Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, the Department of University Safety and the Ottawa Police Service teamed up for a Speed Awareness Campaign at Carleton University.

The Speed Awareness Campaign was the kick off to Safety Week at Carleton University. During the morning Campaign which took place on University Drive, as vehicles passed the athletics buildings, saw Campus Safety Officers engaging with over 200 motorists over a two hour period. The goal of the campaign is to educate motorists of the speed limits on campus. All motorists who passed through the check-point were handed an awareness card which identified their speed as well as other safe driving tips.

Results of the campaign showed that the average speed along this stretch of University Drive was approximately 50 km/h. Carleton University’s campus is a very busy campus with quite a lot of pedestrian traffic. Motorists were reminded that slower speeds equal increased reaction time. Motorists who were traveling below 40km/h were entered to win one of three $30 campus gift cards.

Safety Week continues all week, wrapping up on Oct. 5 with a RAD women’s self defence course. For full details of Safety Week events, visit: http://goo.gl/x9i1O4
