MA Program

The M.A. degree offered by the Philosophy Department of Carleton University is a five-credit program, normally requiring four terms of study. Either three or four of these credits are gained through course work, depending on whether a student chooses to do a thesis (two credits) or a research essay (one credit). One credit consists of a graduate proseminar that all students take. The remaining credits are earned by a combination of seminars and tutorials (the latter consist of small group instruction on topics selected by the students). The Department offers tutorial courses in most major areas of philosophy. Some seminars may be taken at the University of Ottawa.

In recent years, about half the graduates of the program have gone on to Ph.D. studies in Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe. Others have pursued other doctoral degrees or entered a wide variety of other occupations. The program is designed for both kinds of student. Students may enter the program in September or January and may study either full- or part-time.

Recent graduates have entered doctoral programs at Cornell University, University of Toronto, University of California at Berkley, Boston University, McGill University, Université de Montréal, and Oxford University, among other schools.
