The Zelikovitz Centre, Hillel Ottawa, and the Israel Awareness Committee present the Israeli Film Night.  Films will be shown in Hebrew with English subtitles.

Film schedule:

And Thou Shalt Love:  2007.  Drama.  29 min
*Adult Subject Matter
Ohad, who is studying in the special "Hesder" program for orthodox soldiers
of the Israel Defense Forces, experiences profound loneliness while he
conceals from others that he is gay.  After calling a religious hotline for
advice, Ohad is convinced that he is "cured".  Then Ohad's study partner Nir
returns from the army.  Ohad finds he can no longer evade the difficult
questions, both within himself, and between himself and God.

Evacuation Order:  2001:  Comedy:  13 min
On a little hilltop in the Samarian hills, a pretty young settler lives
alone in her caravan.  A man and woman soldier are sent to inform her that
the caravan is illegal and is being dismantled.  The man soldier falls in
love with the settler, and the story becomes complicated...

Family on the Edge:  2009:  Documentary:  58 min
Yoram Drucker, a 42 years old Modern Orthodox Jew from Jerusalem, has a
Dream. To take His family, including their eight-years-pld daughter Chen, to
the peak of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5895 M/ 19,640
feet). Thousands of people try to do it .4 people die, each year, on the
Kilimanjaro. Yoram is sure this type of a family experience is what builds
the long term foundation of ones personality, of family-hood. Family on the
Edge follows the Drucker Family on their Journey-
starting from the careful preparations, through the Physical and Mental
challenges they face, until the dramatic ending. Family on the Edge touches
issues of family-hood, Man & Nature. A glance into the life of a unique
family that makes you think of your own one. A film about the priorities in
life, and about dreams.

** Intermission **

The Journey of Vaan Nguyen:  2005.  Documentary.  56 min
In her painful blog, Vaan Nguyen unfolds the absurdities of her life as an
Israeli-born Vietnamese. Her father was one of the many "boat-people" who
fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and one of the few who were
given asylum in the "Land of the Jews". Now, when the time has come to go
back home, they both leave to Vietnam, hoping they can reclaim their
confiscated lands. Their journey becomes a parable on the loss of identity
and on the fate of refugees.

Stand At Ease:  2005: 19 mins
Eighteen-year-old Noah is religious and torn between two worlds: his
militaristic group of friends in the settlement where he lives and the rock
band in which he is a drummer. When he gets a callup for tryouts for an
elite commando unit in the IDF, Noah must make a choice between his musical
career and his national service. This whacky, edgy comedy has a bitter-sweet
subtext about the effect of compulsory IDF service on the lives of young
Israelis.
