New Maximum coverage for Optional Life Insurance

Carleton University provides quality benefit coverage backed by excellent service, and is now offering Optional Life Insurance, through Great-West Life, to a new maximum of $500,000 for Carleton University Staff. It allows you to increase your existing coverage to reflect your needs and helps you protect your family’s financial future. This coverage is available October 1st, 2013.

Submitting Claims for Compression Hose

Your Great-West Life benefits plan covers compression hose when they are prescribed by a physician and are medically required.

On November 1, 2013, Great-West Life will update the customary prices used for compression hose claims. See their GroupLine Communication for more information.

Basic Life Insurance – Update

Over the past few years, more and more groups have discovered the power of numbers in negotiating discounted rates for their employees for insurance coverage.

Since August 1, 2005, Carleton has been a member of the University Life Insurance Plan or “ULIP” which provides basic life insurance to employees of a number of Ontario universities.

An important part of managing this program is the annual renewal of the contract with our insurer. We have completed our analysis and discussions with Sun Life Financial for the 2013/14 benefit year for our Basic Life Insurance. These discussions have provided Carleton with good news regarding rates for this upcoming year.

We will be having a premium holiday on our basic life insurance for 4 months June 1 to October 1, 2013. As of October 1, 2013 a rate reduction of 5.6% will also be applied.

Health Care Partnership Update

Effective April 1, 2013, dispensing fees for the participating pharmacies in the Health Care Partnership program will increase from $8.40 to $8.62.

Benefits Update 2013

Carleton University is proud to provide a comprehensive benefits program for its employees.

An important part of managing this program is the annual renewal of contracts with our insurers. We have completed our analysis and discussions with Great West Life for the 2013/14 benefit year for our Long Term Disability, Optional Life, Health and Dental Care, which runs from February 1, 2013 to January 31, 2014.

These discussions have provided Carleton with good news regarding rates for this upcoming year. We will have no changes to Health and Dental Care and Optional Life. Our rates for LTD will decrease for many groups with Carleton with the exception of the CUASA group which will remain the same.

Premium rates for benefits will be adjusted as follows effective February 1, 2013:

Optional Life	No change
Health Care	No change
Dental Care	No change
Long Term Disability (LTD) – excepting CUASA	Less 10%
LTD CUASA	No change

The actual amount that you and the University pay for your benefits coverage is available on your Direct Deposit Advice which is accessible through Carleton Central.

Plus, visit the GroupNet portal on the Great West Life website to check out the latest health and wellness topics, make arrangements to have your claim reimbursements deposited directly to your bank account, and access your health and dental claims experience.

Tax time is here again and is a great time to evaluate your contributions to your RRSPs.

Great-West Life has provided an informative document on how to increase your contributions to Carleton’s Group RRSP. It describes the two ways in which you can contribute, by a lump-sum payment, or through payroll deduction.
