SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Award
Magda Goemans was awarded $80 000 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for her research on Ecological sustainability planning for household resilience: opportunities for citizen engagement in municipal climate change adaptation initiatives.
Magda Goemans:
“I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies. My research interests include studies of urban nature, disaster mitigation, and climate change adaptation in Canadian cities. My doctoral work involves a critical analysis of urban ecological sustainability policy discourses in Halifax and Ottawa in the current era of climate change adaptation.
I also completed a Master’s degree at Carleton. My Master’s thesis explored the ways in which the implementation of forest fire mitigation policies in Kelowna, B.C., was complicated by differing interpretations among residents about the sustainable management of local ecosystems.
I have previously worked in the field of sustainability consulting, and have contributed to two federal reports on neighbourhood-scale efforts in Ottawa to reduce household greenhouse gas emissions”.
