Carleton University and the University of Ottawa are pleased to invite you to participate in the first Borders in Globalization (BIG) Conference on September 25-26, 2014, being held on the Carleton University and the University of Ottawa campuses. The conference is followed by an optional field trip on September 27 crossing the Canada-U.S. border twice at Akwesasne/St. Regis and Landsdowne/Thousand Islands.

The goal of the BIG conference is to assemble the more than 100 faculty, non-academic partners and graduate students engaged in research and writing about borders in globalization under the auspices of the project, and to share this work on borders with a widening circle of participants interested in borders in globalization.

The participants will engage in two days of presentations and discussions aimed at introducing themes and concepts, exploring the intersection of themes and regions, and focusing on initial case studies developed by researchers. The organization of the conference is based on the BIG project themes and regions defined as the underlying structure of the project: themes – culture, flows, governance, history, security, sustainability – and regions of Canada (Alberta, Arctic, Atlantic, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Prairies), and selected international regions in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.

For more information on the BIG project and on the Conference (Preliminary program and abstracts), contact Laetitia Rouviere or visit our website.

Online registration will be open until September 15. Please follow this link.

A modest conference registration fee is required to cover costs not allowed by the SSHRC grant. The registration fee is $60 CAN. Students will not be charged for participation.

Participants will be responsible for their travel and accommodation costs. A special rate of $139 per night is available for accommodation at the Westin.

To obtain this rate you must book before August 25, 2014.
