Crina Viju: Analysts say EU talks could run into 2013
Crina Viju, an assistant professor at Carleton University’s Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, said technically Canada and the EU could wrap up the deal at any time, but if they want to keep certain issues on the table, it might take longer than the remaining few months this year to sort them out.

Saul Schwartz: Student debt: Would lower interest rates help?
Saul Schwartz, a professor with the School of Public Policy and Administration, says Canada still has
some of the highest interest rates on student loans in the world. “Canada is a high interest-rate student-loan country and there is no good reason for it,” Prof. Schwartz says.

The Canadian Media Concentration Research (CMCR) project, directed by Professor Dwayne Winseck, School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton University, formally launches today.
The issue of media concentration is a contentious one and good data is hard to come by, highlighted by the intense debates taking place over Bell Canada’s current attempt to acquire Astral Media, the eighth largest media company in Canada. More…
Carleton Announces New First-in-Canada Graduate Degree in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership
In the United States, there are 168 graduate programs that train future leaders in the non-profit and philanthropic sector. In Canada, there has not been a formal graduate education in the study of philanthropy.
Until now.
Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration is launching a new Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership degree and graduate diploma in the summer of 2013. More…

Appeals to patriotism won’t get Canadian retailers far
This week Canadian Tire is launching an advertising campaign to celebrate its 90th anniversary as a venerable purveyor of automotive parts, sports equipment, housewares and garden implements.
The campaign will celebrate the store as a great national institution, founded in Toronto in 1922, now with hundreds of locations across Canada. The tone is unabashedly patriotic, evoking a sense of country. More…

Alternative Media in Canada (UBC Press, 2012), is a new book edited by Kirsten Kozolanka, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University and Patricia Mazepa and David Skinner, both associate professors in the Department of Communication Studies at York University in Toronto.The book speaks to how alternative media hold the promise of building public awareness and action against the constraints and limitations of media conglomeration and cutbacks to public broadcasting.
