Peter O’Neil: Deal with China triggers public concern, lawyer’s warning; Treaty could cost Canada billions if B.C. blocks Northern Gateway project
Despite the dire warnings, Michael Hart, founder of Carleton University’s Centre for Trade Policy and Law, Simon Reisman Chair in Trade Policy and Professor of International Affairs, said Canada is a winner in a deal that won’t have a dramatic overall impact. “Most criticisms of FIPAs is that they don’t really do much,” says Hart.

Bill Graveland: Oil And Gas Canada: Canadians Have Trust Issues With These Companies, A National Poll States
The survey found that academics were considered the most trustworthy, with a score of 6.13 out of 10. Environmental groups and activists were at 5.33, while federal and provincial governments scored in the 4.3 range.” Oil and gas companies rated at the bottom at 3.11. “If you get a rating of 3.1, you’re way down there in terms of credibility — you’re with used-car salesmen and lawyers and others that people don’t really trust,” said André Turcotte, an associate professor at Carleton University’s School of Journalism.

Niamh Scallan: Bay Street law firm uses fingerprint technology to monitor employees’ comings and goings
Carleton University law professor Michael MacNeil, who specializes in legal issues surrounding privacy and surveillance, said the fingerprinting system is just one example of the way workplaces are using technology to monitor and maximize productivity.

They urged him to strike immediately. Instead, they chose reason and reserve – and saved the world, according to Andrew Cohen, founding president of the Historica-Dominion Institute, and professor of journalism and international affairs at Carleton University. More…

The strength and direction of the Indian economy may be up for debate, but one remarkable fact is not: There has been massive growth in the number and wealth of billionaires in India since the economic liberalization measures in 1991. Vivek Dehejia is an economics professor at Carleton University and a writer and commentator on India. More…
Free enterprise meets free speech in B.C.
Courage is a rare thing in politics according to Emile Scheffel, on leave from studies at the UBC Faculty of Law and currently enrolled in the Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management at Carleton. “But there are encouraging exceptions to this rule, and I witnessed one this past weekend in the snowy mountain town of Whistler, B.C.” More…

In this 30 minutes French interview, he explains how the patent system can be excellent for the pharmaceutical business, but it created a crisis in terms of therapeutic innovation.
