Michael Hart: U.S. car dealers refusing Canadians illegally
In a recent CBC article, Michael Hart – who holds the Simon Reisman chair in trade policy at Carleton University – says the big five automakers fear they could lose their Canadian franchises if people were crossing the border to buy their vehicles.
Andrew Cohen: Churchill was history’s indispensable man
Since March, the Library of Parliament has been mounting a small, inspiring exhibit on one of those deathless moments of our history: Winston Churchill’s speech to our House of Commons 70 years ago. It was before a joint session of Parliament, on Dec. 30, 1941, that Sir Winston uttered those imperishable words, mocking skeptics who predicted that the beleaguered British would collapse like toy soldiers before the Nazis. Frances Woolley: Canada’s shame: EI is stealing from the young
In a Globe and Mail article from earlier this month, Frances Woolley writes that this year, all across Canada, students are serving ice cream, painting houses, doing landscaping, working in internships and co-op placements. Every single one of these employees is legally required to pay Employment Insurance premiums. The vast majority will never benefit from their contributions.

Carleton PhD Candidate Wins Ontario Women’s Health Scholars Award
Krystal Kehoe MacLeod, a doctoral candidate with the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University, has been awarded a 2012-13 Doctoral Ontario Women’s Health Scholars Award. The award, which will commence in September 2012, is worth $20,000, with a research allowance of $2,000. More
C.D. Howe Institute Book Co-authored by Carleton Professor Wins Prestigious Purvis Memorial Prize
The C.D. Howe Institute’s groundbreaking study of immigration policy reform has won the 2012 Doug Purvis Memorial Prize. The Canadian Economics Association announced that Toward Improving Canada’s Skilled Immigration Policy: An Evaluation Approach by Charles M. Beach, Alan G. Green and Christopher Worswick won the prize. More
Katherine Graham Receives Ontario Volunteer Service Award
At a ceremony in Ottawa on June 7, 2012, Professor Katherine Graham received the Volunteer Service Award from the Government of Ontario, recognizing her many years of contribution as scholar, administrator, media commentator and volunteer supporting the development of the non-profit sector in Ontario, Canada and internationally. More

A new book release titled International Relations and the First Great Debate (Routledge, 2012) – edited by Associate Professor of Political Science Brian Schmidt – provides an authoritative account of the controversy about the first great debate in the field of International Relations.

FPA Reads 2012

Following an exciting round of nominations, shortlisting and voting on the finalists, the FPA community of students, staff, and faculty selected Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell as the inaugural title for FPA Reads 2012.

There will be a screening the movie – 1984 with John hurt and Richard Burton – September 12 at the Mayfair with a panel discussion, moderated by Evan Solomon, on September 19 – save these dates and tell your friends!
