Carleton School of Journalism and Communication students join Rwandan journalism students to discuss their research tonight (Thursday 26 February) at 6 pm in the River Building.

There’s a lot more to this story than just a shared interest in research.

These students met last summer, when 15 Carleton students travelled to Rwanda with Professor Allan Thompson for a course entitled, “Rwanda: The Media in a Post-Atrocity Setting”. There, they met the three from the National University of Rwanda and spent the next few weeks studying and travelling with them.

They became such good friends, the Carleton students invited Denise Nwase Muvunyi, Noël Manishimwe, and Alain Mbarushimana, back to Ottawa. None had ever been outside of Africa.

Last week, the Rwandan students arrived—during a record-breaking cold snap—and are preparing for tonight’s event, the Kigali to Canada Conference. They will also do live radio interviews on CBC Ottawa and Radio Canada this afternoon.

As for their impressions of Ottawa thus far, the students say they are struck by the natural beauty, as well as the size and quality of the homes. Their favourite part of the visit?

“I loved walking as the snow was falling.”

“I liked standing in the Peace Tower, looking at the view, with the clock over me.”

“I really like how well people treat their pets. The dogs are beautiful.”

You can meet the Rwandan students tonight and hear their stories tonight at 6 pm in the River Building conference rooms on the second floor.
