Master’s students at the Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in PoliticalManagementspend much of their time comparing the strategies of politicians such as Jason Kenney, Justin Trudeau, and Kathleen Wynne in the classroom.

At the Canada 2020 conference, which was held in Ottawa on October 2 and 3, they were able to discuss those policies with the leaders themselves.

Nineteen Riddell graduate students attended the conference, hosted by Canada 2020, a non-partisan think tank working to create “social and economic prosperity for Canada and all Canadians”.

“The Canada 2020 conference was a terrific learning experience,”says organizer Jennifer Robson, an assistant professor at the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs. “Many students mentioned the learning that takes place just by being in the room to see and hear the speeches first-hand.”

Robson says they attended discussions with well-known politicians and political journalists, as well as a workshop on political organizing run by members of the Obama campaign.

“This mirrored and reinforced that intelligent, cross-partisan discussion is possible and important to encourage,” explains Robson. “And that is the mission of the Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management, as well.”
