Carleton Journal Examines Canada and the International Politics of Secession

Carleton’s David Carment, a professor at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and editor of the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal, has published a special issue that examines a number of important aspects of secession, including:

  • An insider’s view of how the U.S. government assessed the crucial 1995 referendum;
  • How Canada might be best positioned to confront secessionist wars abroad; and
  • Why Tamil protesters failed in their bid to influence the current government’s position on the war in Sri Lanka.

“The recent election in Quebec serves as a reminder that questions of secession are just as important to Canada now as they have ever been,” said Carment.

Other articles in this issue focus on the importance and evolution of diplomacy in foreign policy-making, Canada’s approach to building sovereignty in the Arctic and to managing successful humanitarian interventions.
