Carleton Commemorates Former Leader of Tanzania
Carleton will host a one-day conference to commemorate the late Julius Nyerere, former leader of Tanzania. The conference will examine Nyerere’s legacies in economic policy and markets, international politics and solidarities.
The conference will open with a taped message from Jakaya Kikwete, president of the United Republic of Tanzania. The Hon. Abdulrahman Kinana, former speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly and Tanzanian minister, will deliver a keynote address. Deepak Obhrai, parliamentary secretary to the minister of Foreign Affairs, will also speak at the opening with a message from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Other speakers include Patricia Marsden-Dole, former Canadian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Amos Mhina and Rose Shayo from the University of Dar es Salaam, Paul Bjerk of Texas Tech University, Manfred Bienefeld from Carleton and John Saul from York University.
