On Nov. 20 the UN General Assembly’s 192-member human rights committee passed a Canada-led resolution to censure Iran.
. . . “I do not see significant immediate implications of the resolution,” said Dr. Hans-Martin Jaeger, assistant professor of Political Science at Carleton University. “Sponsoring this resolution is in line with Canada’s traditionally proclaimed foreign policy identity as a defender of human rights. However, given the current allegations over the possible involvement of Canadian forces in the torture of prisoners in Afghanistan, Canadian sponsorship of the resolution could backfire and lead to criticism of hypocrisy, especially by Iran and other countries that opposed the resolution.”
