Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning appoints new Director

Announcement
The Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning is pleased to announce the appointment of Larry Gemmel as Director.

Community Service-Learning (CSL) is an educational approach that integrates service in the community with intentional learning activities. Within effective CSL efforts, members of both educational institutions and community organizations work together toward outcomes that are mutually beneficial.

The Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning (CACSL) supports, educates and networks to ensure the effective growth of CSL in Canada. CACSL envisions students, educators and communities building partnerships to learn from each other while working together in innovative ways to strengthen individuals, communities and society. CACSL works actively with educational institutions and communities across Canada and acts as a clearinghouse and knowledge exchange for research, tools and resources, and information related to CSL in Canada and around the world.

Mr. Gemmel brings more than 25 years of experience in the Voluntary Non-profit sector to the role of Director, most recently as Executive Director of the National Alliance for Children and Youth (NACY) and as a consultant to national non-profit organizations.

Prior to his work with NACY, Mr. Gemmel held a variety of senior management positions with United Way-Centraide organizations, including Project Manager for United Way International to create Global Standards, CIO and Senior Director of Collaborative Projects for United Way of Canada – Centraide Canada, Project Director and CEO of Rainbow Collaborative Technologies/Technocollaboration Arc-en-ciel, Executive Director of United Way of St. Catharines & District, Campaign Manager at United Way Toronto, and CampaignDirector of United Way of Peterborough & District.

Mr. Gemmel started his career in fund-raising and community development with Trent University’s Fund for Excellence in 1983. The Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning is moving to a new home at Carleton University in Ottawa, and Mr. Gemmel will assume his duties full-time on 25 August, taking over from founding Director Cheryl Rose.

Please join CACSL in thanking Cheryl for her many years of excellent and dedicated service and for her leadership establishing community service-learning in Canada.
