Internship Program
The internship program is available to students registered in the Intensive MA stream in Film Studies. It is designed to enable students to apply knowledge, critical and research skills in particular professional settings by working in various institutional settings in Ottawa. This program also builds on the partnerships established between Carleton University’s Film Studies program and institutions in the Ottawa-Carleton region that include the Canadian Film Institute, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, One World Film Festival, the Independent Film Cooperative of Ottawa, Saw Video, Artengine, Museum of Science and Technology, the Film and Video Policy Branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the National Film Archives.
The following is a list of links to some of our “community” partners. We are grateful to some of these organizations for providing us with practica/internship placements.
- Canadian Film Institute (CFI)
- Ottawa International Animation Festival
- Saw Video
- Artengine
- Independent Filmmaking Coop of Ottawa (IFCO)
- Mayfair Theater
- Canada Science and Technology Museum
- One World Film Festival (at One World Arts)
Types of projects
Depending on the institution, projects will be tailored to specific areas such as archiving, collection management, programming, film and new media culture, film funding and/or policy. While most students will be working under the supervision of a staff member, individual curatorial, research and/or data analysis projects aimed at being presented in a public venue will also be encouraged. These projects would enable students to create a portfolio and/or build up their professional qualifications.
Procedures for placement
Information on the nature of projects and the number of available placements will be circulated to the students admitted to the One-Year MA program during the summer. At this time, students will also be advised about placement procedures and evaluation. The process of matching eligible students with institutions will begin one month before the end of registration for each term. While the Graduate Internship Supervisor will initiate this process, the on-site supervisor is responsible for the selection of students for the project.
Hours of work
Students are expected to work on site one day a week (maximum 8 hours) on a project assigned by the Institution.
Evaluation
The evaluation will be based on the following components, the terms of which are to be agreed in advance and no later than the end of the registration period:
- A written component (journal and 10-15 page essay based on a previously determined topic)
- A report by the on-site supervisor. He or she is asked to rate assess the student’s performance on a scale from 5 (maximum) to 1 (minimum) in 5 categories: attendance, ability to perform specific tasks, ability to work independently, personal interaction with other staff, and overall rating. The on-site supervisor can also provide any additional comments.
