Grad student Nick Falvo was in Whitehorse recently to unveil a report he wrote entitled Poverty Amongst Plenty: Waiting for the Yukon Government to Adopt a Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Falvo is a PhD student in the School of Public Policy and Administration.

The report discusses how the Yukon government helps the poor and makes recommendations for change. The study touches on important issues of health, strategy, food, shelter, child care, education and relations with the federal government.

He teaches a course on affordable housing and homelessness in Carleton’s School of Social Work and is also is the author of several policy papers, including a primer on homelessness and social housing, a policy paper looking at various options for improving housing affordability, a paper on the housing-first approach to housing the homeless and a policy paper on the Great Recession’s impact on homelessness.

He currently conducts research under Professor Frances Abele’s supervision on two SSHRC-funded research projects looking at poverty and affordable housing in Canada’s North.
