Last time, we asked you to mention some of your favorite places to visit in Ottawa. Here is what some grad students had to say:
“If you enjoy arts, take advantage of FREE Thursday nights (5-8 p.m.) at the National Gallery of Canada. It is one of my favourite places to go when I need a break from studying and writing. The museum’s permanent collection includes Canadian, European, Indigenous and contemporary art, as well as a sculpture and photography wing. There is also FREE admission on Sunday, September 30th for ‘Culture Day. The museum hosts many excellent visiting exhibits such as Van Gogh this summer. Present your student card and save $10-15!”
“While we anxiously await the return of our Ottawa CFL team, why not check out the Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings? The Farmer’s Market was traditionally held at Lansdowne Park. Now that Lansdowne Park is under construction the Farmer’s Market has moved to Brewer Park- conveniently located across the street from Carleton Campus! On Sunday mornings beginning at 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.,. local artists, farmers, bakers, chefs etc. provide vegan meals, vegetarian meals, organic meat, fruits and vegetables for sale. Plus a whole lot more. It is a great way to meet neighbours and slow down. Customers walk at a leisurely pace. It’s a great place to get some fresh air and buy healthy, nutritious food. Dogs welcome. Kid friendly (Crash the Clown makes animal balloons!)”
“I’ve been a graduate student at Carleton for four years, and the best cultural find for me has been the Great Canadian Theatre Company . Theatre is a wonderful alternative to television and movies. Also, GCTC is located in a part of town that I otherwise rarely frequent, so it also offers a nice change of scenery. Note: GCTC offers student rush tickets for just $13 (taxes included).”
“Live Rush theatre tickets are a great deal, and Ada’s Diner on Bank Street is another good idea. There are also lots of coffee shops, book stores, and comic book stores around town. Be sure to check out all of the interesting neighbo(u)rhoods in Ottawa, and definitely go to Question Period at least once because it’s hilarious. Sometimes intentionally so.”
