Carleton University has created a unique graduate program that pulls together its extensive academic and research expertise in the health field from various disciplines across the university.
The University intends to launch the new Master of Science (MSc) degree in Health: Science, Technology and Policy (HSTP) this fall. There will also be two graduate diplomas, one geared at health professionals working in the field and one for current graduate students.
The MSc degree will address a growing need in the public health field to hire employees who can apply their knowledge in the workplace. It brings together 50 faculty members from 23 departments and is the first graduate program at Carleton to involve all five academic faculties.
“This broadly interdisciplinary approach, in which Carleton leads the way, is one of the factors that makes the new MSc distinctive,” says Susan Aitken, director of the new Institute of Health: Science, Technology and Policy. “It will provide our students with a wealth of expertise from many different backgrounds, while they work as members of multi-disciplinary research teams that will provide a broad-based context for their particular area of interest.”
There are several existing master’s degrees in public health offered in Canada. None of them provide the integrated skill base and hands-on training at the foundation of the new Carleton program. As well, many of these other programs focus on medically-based options with minimal exposure to contributing disciplines such as engineering, social work, industrial design, law, business and sociology that will all be incorporated under Carleton’s new program.
The MSc will offer students:
• An enviable range of health-related expertise and courses that provides a foundation in health science, policy and technology, as well as skills that are relevant to the workplace.
• Given Carleton’s location in the nation’s capital, an opportunity to leverage opportunities within the public sector and other organizations based in Ottawa that focus on health-related matters.
• The ability to engage in an innovative, group-based research project that helps solve challenging problems raised by today’s health community.
The new HSTP program will be housed in the new Institute of Health: Science, Technology and Policy along with the Centre for Research on Health: Science, Technology and Policy created earlier this year at Carleton. The Centre is a home for a community of Carleton University students and faculty, as well as external partners who are interested in solving complex problems facing today’s health sector.

Carleton is also offering two other new graduate programs starting this fall: a PhD program in Social Work and a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies.
Prospective students are advised that offers of admission to a new program may be made only after the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance has approved the program. The program has already been through Carleton’s own quality assurance process and has been approved by Senate.
