Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship

Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship

Each year, funding permitting, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences awards the Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship to one of its outstanding faculty members, in order to facilitate the completion of a major research project that requires significant release time. The fellowship consists of up to 2.0 credits of teaching release, but holders are expected to maintain their commitments to teach and supervise graduate students.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • All FASS faculty members at the rank of assistant professor and above, holding tenured, or tenure-track appointments, are eligible to apply, but it should be understood that this is intended as the Faculty’s “senior” award, intended for applicants with a very significant track record of outstanding research.
  • Faculty members holding an established Research Chair, and those on leave during the period of the award, are not eligible.
  • Faculty members are precluded from holding the Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship concurrently with another university or Faculty Research or Teaching Achievement award.
  • Previous holders of the Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship are not eligible.
  • Applicants should have a major research or publication project in the final stages of completion.

Applications should include the following items:

  • a current curriculum vitae;
  • an outline of the project, specifying work already completed, and explaining the need for significant release time;
  • a description of the significance of the project;
  • any pertinent correspondence with publishers;
  • a statement from the appropriate chair or director indicating awareness of the application, and the unit’s ability to manage the release.

Application and Selection Procedure:

  • Applications are due in the Office of the Dean on or before January 31st each year.
  • Applications are adjudicated by the Executive of the Faculty Board.
  • The Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship is announced at the annual FASS vin d’honneur, usually held in March.
  • Holders of the Marston LaFrance Fellowship are required to offer a public presentation of their research early in the winter term, arranged by the Office of the Dean.

Please note: This award is not supported by an endowment or a base budget, and thus depends on the Office of the Dean having sufficient discretionary funds available in any given year.
