The FASS Junior Research Award competition is for junior faculty members (assistant professors and associate professors who have held that rank for less than five years).

These awards are designed to support research in the summer/ fall of 2013 that then will lead to a formal application for a major external Tri-Council grant (SSHRC, NSERC, or CIHR) in the fall/winter 2013-14 competitions.

Applications should include:

• a proposal (maximum 4 pages, indicating the research question, the theoretical framework, and the methodological approach)
• a budget justification of up to $7500
• a current Curriculum Vitae
• a brief statement of support from your Chair or Director.

Applications should be submitted electronically by April 9 of each year to Pauline Rankin, Associate Dean of FASS. They will be adjudicated by a committee of senior faculty members, with results announced in by April 25. Beyond any assessment of the quality of the research proposal, an important criterion applied in the adjudication process is whether the research is at a stage that will permit an external Tri-Council application in the upcoming competition cycle.

All awards will be made with the strict condition that awardees must apply for a Tri-Council grant in the fall/winter 2013-14, and must participate in the internal mentoring process for the development of their fall application.

Please note the following restrictions:

• Previous winners are ineligible.
• Current holders of Tri-Council grants and other major external awards are ineligible.
• Applicants who receive notice that their previously-submitted Tri-Council applications are successful will not be eligible to hold a FASS 2013 Junior Faculty Research Award.
• Winners of the FASS 2013 Junior Faculty Research Awards will be ineligible to apply for the 2013 internal development grant competition organized by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International). The details of that competition should be announced shortly by OVPRI.
