Understanding the “Chinese Dream”
— An insight into China’s political institutions and social economic development from the leading scholars of major Chinese universities and key policy strategists from the Chinese government.
How can we understand the “Chinese Dream” as presented by new Chinese leadership? How can we respond to the opportunities and challenges presented by recent political, social, and economic development in China?
The Confucius Institute’s first Canada-China Forum on China Studies and Research at Carleton University will propose these important questions to key policy strategist of the Chinese government and leading scholars of major Chinese Universities.
To explore the various policy options and possibilities that arise from Canadian-Chinese collaboration, these speakers will share their real-world China policy experience and their in-depth academic research with their Canadian counterparts, colleagues and other stakeholders.
As Canada’s Capital University, Carleton University aims to build a Centre of China Studies and Research at the National Capital Confucius Institute in partnership with ten major Chinese universities and Chinese policy research institutions, as well as universities and research institutions across Canada. The 2013 Canada-China Forum on China Studies and Research will inaugurate a strategic annual initiative that will lead to a series of research projects and workshops in Canada and China, as well as China Studies scholarships and certificate-training programs.

Speakers:
Prof. ZHU Guanglei
China Changjiang Scholar, Provost and Vice President of Nankai University.
Dr. Zhu is a leading expert on politics and government in contemporary China.
Professor Zhu’s has publications include “Governing China –Decision Making and Implementation”, “Interpretation of the Processes of the Chinese Government,” “The Gap Between the Poor and Rich in Contemporary China” and “An Analysis of All Social Strata in Contemporary China.”
Professor Zhu is a Member of the Evaluation Group (Political Science) of Academic Degree Committee of State Council of Chinese Central Government. He also serves as the Vice President of the Chinese Society for Government Reform and is the Vice Chair of the National Education Steering Committee on Political Science. He is also the Standing Director of the China Society for Human Right Studies.
Dr. SHI Xuehua
Deputy Dean of the School of Government at Beijing Normal University, the Director of the Centre for Political Development and Government Innovation, and the Centre for Political Party.
Dr. Shi is currently the advisor to nine Departments and ministries of the Chinese Government. This includes the Central Organizational Department of the CPC, Central Office of the CPC, Ministry of Education. He is one of the first PhD candidates of Dr. WANG Huning and is the current member of Politburo of the CPC and the Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC.
In 2012, Professor SHI was invited to make a special lecture to the top leaders of the Chinese Communist Party on China’s political system reform. He is often asked to lecture to the ministerial and provincial leadership in China. He has published thirty-six books including five monographs in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, two hundred and sixty journal papers in Chinese and in English.
Dr. LI Junqing
Professor of economics, assistant Dean of School of Economics at Nankai University.
Dr. Li’s main research field is financial economics theory. This includes the China economic development model, RMB currency rate policy and international trade. Practical cases and examples are used extensively in his teaching of economics.
Professor Li has been actively involved in economic development projects for the Beijing municipal government, the Tianjin municipal government and the Shenzhen government, as well as advising a few financial institutions and investment corporations. Professor Li has published forty-six academic papers on Economic Research, China Economic Quarterly and The Journal of World Economy (China). This includes research papers in English. Dr. Li published four books and translated two English books.
