Open House for Geography Field Course
Open House for Geography Field Course
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) is hosting an Open House on Monday, November 12, to showcase student work in GEOG 3000, DGES’s annual summer field course.
The course involves an intensive field portion (this year in the Lanark region) in late August, followed by data analysis, report writing, and poster development in the Fall term. Student projects are designed in consultation with community partners, in order to ensure that students are exposed to a range of “real-life” applications of geographic research, and also to ensure that the projects are relevant, timely, and meaningful for communities.
This year, the students are working with Lanark Tourism and the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists on the development of an interpretive canoe route along the Mississippi River, with Lanark County Forests and the Mississippi River Conservation Authority on the assessment and proposed development of a disused piece of county forest near Smith’s Falls, and with regional maple syrup producers and Lanark Tourism on a study of the maple industry.
You are invited to join students, faculty, and community partners on Monday, November 12, from 3-5pm, in Loeb A220. The event will start with a relatively formal presentation phase at 3pm, followed by informal discussion with the students until 5pm. Refreshments will be provided.
For more information, contact Emilie Cameron (emilie_cameron@carleton.ca) or Derek Mueller (derek_mueller@carleton.ca), the course instructors.
