PhD candidate awarded Stewart Reid Memorial Fellowship

Carleton doctoral student Kevin Walby has been awarded the Canadian Association of University Teachers J.H. Stewart Reid Memorial Fellowship.

Having published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, Walby has received many other awards and honours, including the prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Queen’s Fellowship.

Part of Carleton’s sociology department, Walby is the prisoners’ struggles editor for the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP), an academic, peer-reviewed journal written by prisoners. The JPP is edited by fellow PhD student, Justin Piché. According to Walby, the journal has received numerous letters from prisoners and scholars alike saying the JPP has changed their perspectives on the criminal justice system. “We’re doing something unconventional by privileging the voices of prisoners,” he says.

Stewart Reid served as the first Executive Secretary of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). Under his leadership, CAUT became a national entity, influential in government circles and recognized by other national associations.  The fellowship is worth $5,000.
