Online Arctic Bay Atlas debuts
The Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC) was part of the team that launched the Cybercartographic Atlas of Arctic Bay in Iqaluit on March 30, 2009. The atlas is an online, community-based atlas project to engage youth and Elders of Arctic Bay, Nunavut in researching, documenting, and representing their multi-faceted spatial knowledge. The GCRC has produced the map in partnership with Nunavut Youth Consulting, and Nunavut Arctic College. Ongoing funding for Carleton’s part of the work is being provided by the IPY Logistics, Training, Communication and Outreach program and previous funding has come from SSHRC. The Inuit Heritage Trust received support from Canadian Heritage, some of which was contracted to the Centre. According to feedback from the North, the atlas is being very well received.
