Capturing the Gutai
Ming Tiampo will examine the work of the Gutai, a group of influential Japanese artists whose work foreshadowed artistic developments in the 1960s and 1970s in Europe and America. In addition to their influence in Japan, Ming is interested in the Gutai’s activities in the United States, France, Italy and the Netherlands.
She will focus on how developments in mass media and travel facilitated a ‘transnational cultural field’, and how this was interpreted regionally.
Tiampo will be working with colleagues from the Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan. Their three-year research project will culminate in a collaborative database that will capture the work and influences of the Gutai movement, and ‘claim a place for the Gutai in the history of modernist art practices’.
