BEng with Advanced Standing/Transfer Credits
Advanced Standing or Transfer Credits are credit for courses you have taken prior to being admitted to the BEng degree. They will appear on your audit, which you can run in Carleton Central. These credits MAY be eligible for you to use towards your BEng degree. If you are uncertain about this you should contact your Admissions Officer.
- Students with these credits must create their own course schedule. Our Engineering Scheduler Tool can assist you in selecting a conflict-free timetable. You must select courses/sections that do not conflict with one another. You may wish to use the ‘Timetable Whiz’ in the Engineering Scheduler Tool, if you are having difficulty.
- Determine which courses you have received credit for and then decide whether or not you would like to take that course anyway, as it will ensure you have a firm understanding of 1st year core courses in the Maths and Sciences.
- Review your prerequisite tree to determine which courses are required, don’t forget to include Complementary Studies Electives, if they are required for your program.
- Most courses required for your program contain a lecture and lab section; you must select the corresponding lab to the lecture that you have picked. For example: MATH 1004 A/A1; the lecture is section A and the lab is A1. You cannot select lecture section A with lab B4, this will not work and you will not be able to register properly.
- From the Scheduler Tool you will record the CRNs (Course Registration Number) for all of the courses you have entered on the timetable which you wish to register.
- Login to Carleton Central, access the Registration-Add/Drop Classes page.
- Enter the 5-digit CRNs at the bottom of the Add/Drop screen and hit “submit changes”.
- If there is space in the classes you have selected and you meet all of the prerequisite requirements, then you will be registered in the courses.
- You will need to do this for both the Fall and Winter terms – ‘Change Terms’ at the bottom of the Add/Drop screen.

If you are not able to register in your required courses;
- You may not be able to access courses on Carleton Central for many reasons, such as the classroom is full or the Central system does not recognize your Transfer Credit as being the prerequisite for the course you wish to register in.
- After you have attempted registration and received an ‘Error Message’, you should determine how to proceed:
- ‘Link Error’ means that you have only requested access to one part of the course. This could mean that you are only selecting the lecture section of the course but in Engineering most of the courses also have a lab or turorial section. You must enter both CRNs into Carleton Central and they must be corresponding sections, such as A & A1 or C & C4, you cannot enter A & B4: these do not correspond/match and the system will not let you register in this way.
- ‘Prerequisite Error’ means that you do not meet the prerequisite requirements to take the course. You can look up the prerequisites in the Undergraduate Calendar on www.carleton.ca but if you have Advanced Standing/Transfer Credits the system will also give you a Prerequisite Error message. - You will now proceed to the Engineering Request Form found on our website (through the Scheduler Tool). This is where you will request Engineering courses (ECOR – 1st year and upper year Engineering courses).
- If you require access to non-Engineering courses (MATH, CHEM, BIOL, PHYS, CCDP, ARCH) you will use Carleton Central’s Override Request Form.
- If you are still experiencing difficulty you should call the Academic Support Office for Engineering at 613-520-4067. Staff are available to assist you.
