(Ottawa) –

Carleton engineering professor Dr. Ata Khan has been presented with a lifetime achievement award by the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE).

CITE president Bruce Belmore says: “It is truly an honour to be nominated and selected for this prestigious award as it is bestowed on very few individuals by ITE International in Washington.”
Dr. Khan is an expert on sustainable and intelligent transportation systems and the director of the Transportation Research Centre, housed in the department of civil and environmental engineering at Carleton University. Recently, he co-led a national team that used “smart” technology to simulate the driving experience in cars in order to research safer and more efficient transportation. Followup studies are planned on ‘intelligent driving’ involving cars and transit for enhancing safety, efficiency and reducing environmental impacts. Dr. Khan has consulted or advised on projects for federal and provincial governments, agencies and commissions, the United Nations and a client in Japan.
Following his PhD at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Khan joined Carleton in 1969, where he has been a full professor since 1981 and served as associate dean, Faculty of Engineering and Design, from 1998 to 2000. He is a fellow of both the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The Institute of Transportation Engineers is an international educational and scientific association of transportation professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. ITE facilitates the application of technology and scientific principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of transportation. Through its products and services, ITE promotes professional development of its members, supports and encourages education, stimulates research, develops public awareness programs and serves as a conduit for the exchange of professional information.
