Toronto hosted the XVI International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2006) from August 12th - 18th, 2006. The AIDS conference is the largest conference on a single health issue. The participants included over 20,000 researchers, government leaders, community workers, activists and people living with HIV/AIDS. The biennial conference plays a critical role in setting the agenda for global response to the HIV pandemic.

Young people - especially young women - are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, representing over 50% of new HIV infections occurring annually. However, young people are often excluded and/or marginalized in the global response. The International AIDS Conference is a crucial opportunity for youth to advocate to decision-makers and to scale up their involvement.
