AHGSS Graduate Conference 2014

Conference Logo image

Access/Restriction is a one-day interdisciplinary graduate student conference that will investigate historical and contemporary issues of accessibility, limitations and control. Although one implies the other, access and restriction can be both distinct and interrelated concepts for exploration. This conference is a site for academic collaboration and dialogue surrounding the ways in which visual culture is embedded with issues of who has access and how society defines or regulates visual materials.

  • The opening reception and keynote address will be held on Friday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Carleton University Art Gallery, with the keynote artist talk by Thomas Kneubühler starting at 7:00 p.m.
  • The conference takes place on Saturday, March 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in 2228 River Building.
Coffee and registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Updated Conference Program and Schedule

Exhibition: In conjunction with the second annual AHGSS Graduate Student Conference a group of three students are co-curating an exhibition. Drawing inspiration from the conference theme, the exhibit will take place in the liminal spaces of the Carleton University Art Gallery: the first and second floor entranceways and the first floor vitrine. The work of two local artists, Andrea Campbell and Guillermo Trejo, will be featured along with a piece by the conference keynote speaker, Montréal-based artist Thomas Kneubühler. Through artwork and accompanying text the exhibition will contribute to the dialogue generated by the conference.

We have now successfully reached our $1000 Future Funder goal! A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated and helped to spread the word about our project! With your generous support we will be able to host an exhibition alongside our conference this year. The project will remain open to donations until March 1st. Additional donations will go towards supporting the conference this year and will contribute to a fund for next year’s conference.”
