“African Music in Culture”

Short description: Carleton University’s AFRI 3100 African Studies Abroad Course will immerse students in the vibrant musical culture and community life in Dagbamete, an Ewe village in the Volta Region of Ghana, as well as give them a taste of urban musical culture in Ghana’s capital city, Accra.The course will be based at the West African Cultural Exchange Centrein Dagbamete, which is founded and directed by Kwasi Dunyo. In addition, students will spend some time in Accra with sessions at the University of Ghana at Legon. The course will be led by percussionist and educator Kathy Armstrong, founding director of Baobab Community and instructor in School for Studies in Art and Culture (Music),in partnership with her Ghanaian mentor, Kwasi Dunyo, with whom she has been collaborating for over twenty years.
